Email open rates are dropping. But text messages get read in minutes. Here's how to ask for reviews where your clients actually are.

You sent a testimonial request email. It sits in your client's inbox between a Shopify notification and a newsletter they forgot they subscribed to. They see it, think "I'll do this later," and never do.

Sound familiar?

Text messages and WhatsApp have a different dynamic. They get read within minutes. The response rate is dramatically higher than email. And for many businesses - especially service-based ones - messaging is already how you communicate with clients.

Why Messaging Works Better for Testimonial Requests

Open rates. Text messages have a 98% open rate compared to roughly 20% for email. Your request will actually be seen.

Speed. Most texts are read within 3 minutes. The ask hits while the positive feeling is still fresh.

Casual tone. A testimonial request over WhatsApp or text feels like a natural extension of the conversation, not a formal marketing ask.

Mobile-native. Your client is already on their phone. They tap the link, fill out the form on mobile, and submit. No switching devices.

The Formula

Keep it short. Three elements: gratitude, the ask, the link.

WhatsApp/text template:

Hey [Name]! Thanks again for [project/visit/purchase] - so glad you're happy with it. Would you mind leaving a quick testimonial? Takes 30 sec: [link] 💜

That's it. Don't write a novel. The link does the heavy lifting.

More Templates by Situation

After a service appointment (salon, dentist, mechanic):

Hi [Name], hope you're loving the [result]! If you have a sec, a quick review would mean a lot: [link] Thanks!

After delivering freelance work:

Hey [Name]! Now that [project] is wrapped up - would you mind dropping a quick testimonial? It really helps me get more clients like you. [link]

After a purchase (e-commerce):

Hi [Name], your order arrived! How are you liking it? If you'd leave a quick review, it would make our day: [link]

Follow-up (if no response after 3 days):

Hey [Name], just a gentle nudge on the testimonial - totally understand if you're busy! [link] No pressure either way 😊

WhatsApp vs SMS vs iMessage

WhatsApp - best for international clients and businesses that already use WhatsApp for communication. Rich formatting, no character limits. Common in Europe, Latin America, Asia.

SMS - universal. Works on every phone. Best for local businesses in the US, Canada, Australia. Character limit of 160, so keep it short. Include the link.

iMessage - great for 1-on-1 client relationships. Feels the most personal. No way to automate.

Use whatever channel you already communicate with the client on. If you've been chatting on WhatsApp throughout the project, send the request on WhatsApp. Don't switch channels.

Timing

Send the request at the right moment:

Immediately after the positive experience. The client just complimented your work, their appointment went great, they received their order. Ask now.

During business hours. Don't text at 10pm. Send between 10am-6pm on weekdays.

Not on Monday morning. People are catching up on their week. Tuesday through Thursday tends to work best.

Permission and Etiquette

Only text clients who've communicated with you this way before. If your entire relationship has been over email, don't suddenly text them. It feels invasive.

One follow-up maximum. If they don't respond after one nudge, drop it.

Make it optional. "No pressure either way" or "totally understand if you're busy" shows respect for their time.

Don't send bulk texts. Each request should be personalized with their name and project. Mass texting testimonial requests is spammy.

The Mobile Form Matters

Since 100% of text/WhatsApp testimonial requests lead to a mobile form, the form must be optimized for phones:

  • Large tap targets for star ratings
  • Single text field, not five separate inputs
  • Photo upload that opens the camera
  • Submit button that's easy to reach with a thumb
  • Total time under 30 seconds

If your form feels clunky on mobile, you'll lose people between the link tap and the submit button. Test it on your own phone first.
