They both build trust. But they do it in different ways and belong in different places.

If you run an online store, you've probably thought about reviews. But "reviews" means two very different things in e-commerce, and most stores only do one of them.

Product reviews are about specific items. "This jacket runs large - size down." They live on product pages and help people decide whether to buy that specific item.

Brand testimonials are about the overall experience. "Fast shipping, great packaging, and the quality is amazing. I'll definitely order again." They live on your homepage, about page, and landing pages. They help people decide whether to trust your store at all.

You need both. Here's why and how.

Product Reviews: The Table Stakes

Product reviews are expected in e-commerce. Shoppers actively look for them before buying. A product page without reviews feels risky.

What they do: - Answer specific questions (sizing, quality, color accuracy) - Reduce return rates (people buy the right size/variant) - Improve SEO (user-generated content with product keywords) - Increase conversion on individual product pages

How to collect them: Use a Shopify/WooCommerce review app (Judge.me, Loox, Stamped). These send automated emails after purchase asking for a product review. Some offer photo reviews and incentives.

Where they belong: On the product page itself. Below the product description, above related products.

Brand Testimonials: The Trust Builder

Brand testimonials are about your store as a whole - the shopping experience, customer service, packaging, shipping speed, overall quality.

What they do: - Build trust with first-time visitors who haven't seen your products yet - Differentiate your brand from competitors selling similar products - Address concerns that product reviews don't cover (shipping, support, returns) - Work on pages that have no products (homepage, about, landing pages)

How to collect them: Send a collection link to your best customers after their 2nd or 3rd order. Repeat customers have the most meaningful things to say about your brand. Use a tool like Quoted that gives you a branded form, moderation, and an embeddable widget.

Where they belong: Homepage hero section, about page, dedicated testimonials page, marketing emails, social media.

Why You Need Both

Consider a first-time visitor to your store:

  1. They land on your homepage from an ad or social media
  2. They see brand testimonials: "Amazing quality, fast shipping, love this brand" → Trust established
  3. They browse products
  4. They find something they like, check the product reviews: "Fits true to size, color matches the photos" → Confidence in the specific item
  5. They add to cart
  6. On the cart/checkout page, they see another brand testimonial: "Third order from this store. Never disappointed" → Final reassurance

Without brand testimonials, step 2 is missing. The visitor is browsing products without any store-level trust. Without product reviews, step 4 is missing. They like the product but aren't sure about specifics.

The Implementation

For product reviews: Install a review app in your e-commerce platform. Judge.me (free plan available), Loox (photo reviews), or Stamped. These are purpose-built for product-level reviews.

For brand testimonials: Use a separate tool like Quoted. Create a project for your brand, collect testimonials from your best customers, and embed the widget on your homepage and key landing pages.

Keep them separate. Product review apps and brand testimonial tools serve different purposes and belong in different places. Trying to force one tool to do both usually means doing both poorly.

E-Commerce Specific Testimonial Questions

When collecting brand testimonials from e-commerce customers, ask:

  • What made you choose our store over others?
  • How was the shopping experience (ordering, shipping, packaging)?
  • What surprised you about our brand?
  • Would you order again? Why?

These produce testimonials that address the exact concerns new shoppers have - concerns that product reviews don't cover.
