You can't control what people say on Yelp. But you can curate the best reviews on your own website.

Restaurants live and die by reviews. A one-star difference on Google can change your revenue by 5-9%. But most restaurant owners rely entirely on third-party platforms - Yelp, Google, TripAdvisor - where they have zero control over what's displayed.

Your own website is different. You choose which reviews to feature. You place them where they'll have the most impact. And you don't compete with ads for your competitors right next to your reviews.

Why Website Testimonials Matter for Restaurants

You control the narrative. On Yelp, a two-year-old complaint about a dish you've since removed sits right next to your recent five-star reviews. On your website, you curate.

No competitor ads. Visit any restaurant's Yelp page - you'll see ads for competing restaurants. On your website, the spotlight is yours alone.

Visual opportunity. Pair reviews with beautiful food photography. "The risotto was incredible" next to a photo of said risotto is chef's kiss.

Reservation conversion. Place testimonials right above your "Book a Table" button. Social proof at the moment of decision.

What Restaurant Reviews Should Highlight

Specific dishes. "The truffle pasta is the best I've had outside of Italy" is infinitely more useful than "Good food." Specific mentions help undecided diners choose what to order.

The experience. "Perfect for a date night - intimate atmosphere, attentive but not intrusive service." This sells the experience, not just the food.

Value. "Incredible quality for the price. The tasting menu is an absolute steal at $45." Addresses the "is it worth it?" concern.

Special occasions. "They made our anniversary dinner unforgettable. The chef even sent out a surprise dessert." This markets your venue for celebrations.

Returning customers. "We come here every Friday. It's our favorite spot in the neighborhood." Repeat visits signal consistent quality.

Collecting Reviews from Diners

Table QR code. Place a small card or table tent at each table: "Enjoying your meal? Leave us a quick review!" with a QR code. Diners scan while waiting for dessert or the check.

On the receipt. Print a QR code on every receipt: "Your feedback helps us serve you better."

Post-visit text. If you collect phone numbers through your reservation system, send a follow-up text: "Thanks for dining with us tonight! If you enjoyed it, a quick review would mean the world: [link]"

WiFi landing page. If you offer guest WiFi, redirect to a page that includes a review request alongside the WiFi password.

Where to Display Restaurant Testimonials

Homepage. A carousel of your best recent reviews, ideally paired with food photography. This is what visitors see before checking the menu.

Menu page. Next to featured dishes: "Our most popular dish" + a testimonial about that dish.

Reservation/booking page. Right above the "Book" button. Last chance to convert a browsing visitor into a confirmed reservation.

Private events page. If you host events, show testimonials from past event clients: "They handled our company dinner for 40 people flawlessly."

Social media. Screenshot your best reviews and share as Instagram stories or posts. Food + review = engaging content.

Seasonal Rotation

Restaurants change menus seasonally. Your testimonials should too.

Feature reviews that mention current dishes, not items you discontinued six months ago. After each menu change, collect a fresh round of reviews and rotate them into your widget.

A testimonial about your summer menu in December feels out of touch. Keep it relevant.

The Multi-Platform Strategy

Don't abandon Google and Yelp - they matter for local SEO and discoverability. But treat them differently:

Google/Yelp: Encourage reviews there for search visibility. You can't control what's displayed, but volume helps.

Your website: Curate the best reviews from all sources and display them with your branding, paired with your photography, in the right context.

The combination of strong third-party reviews AND curated website testimonials is the winning formula.
